Macuto translates Instagram images tagged with #macuto into seven perforated plastic sheets. Social media photos are analyzed for color data and compared to Reverón's color palettes from the same location, creating cutting patterns for the transparent plastic. Light passes through the calculated perforations, creating shifting shadows as viewers move around the suspended sheets.
693 Instagram images geolocated in Macuto were collected and organized by geographic clusters (beach, town center, mountains). Dominant colors were extracted using Pantone analysis and compared to color palettes derived from six Reverón paintings of the same locations. The comparative color data determined perforation patterns for each plastic sheet, with color frequency translating to hole density and placement. Temporal posting patterns influenced the overall distribution of perforations across the seven panels.
